Those records establish the importance of place, but a specific listing still needs provenance. The word Santipur in a title should be supported by sourcing information, not deduced from stripes or colour alone.

Why the border matters

Many Bengal cotton designs find their character through proportion. A relatively calm body allows a border or striped pallu to hold the rhythm. The effect is useful in everyday wear because it remains distinct without becoming visually heavy.
