How to Care for Sarees: Cleaning, Storage and Better Folds

Confirm the fibre before choosing a method

The safest care instruction begins with a verified product fact. Silk, cotton, linen, blends, metallic threads, prints and surface embellishment can react differently to water, heat and cleaning agents.

If the fibre or technique is unconfirmed, do not experiment with a strong detergent or high heat. Ask the seller or use a textile-care professional who can inspect the piece directly.

Address stains without spreading them

Blot a fresh spill gently with a clean, colourfast cloth. Do not rub, because friction can push the stain outward or disturb delicate threads. Avoid household bleach unless the verified care label explicitly allows it.

Tell a professional cleaner what caused the stain and where it is located. Concealing a previous treatment makes it harder to choose a safe process.

Drying and ironing need restraint

Direct, prolonged sunlight can shift colour. Dry in a well-ventilated shaded space when the confirmed care method permits washing. Support the saree so wet weight does not pull sharply at one edge.

Use the lowest suitable iron setting and a clean pressing cloth. Test a hidden area first, especially around metallic thread, print, applique or raised motifs.

Store clean, dry and breathable

Fold the saree only when fully dry. Keep it in a clean, breathable wrap away from damp walls, direct light and strong fragrance. Avoid sealing a possibly damp textile in plastic.

Give the pallu and borders enough space so heavy sections do not create hard pressure lines. Remove brooches and safety pins before storage.

Refold and inspect

Long storage can set permanent creases. Periodically unfold the saree in a clean space, inspect for moisture or insects, and refold along different lines.

Keep a small care record with fibre, cleaning history and repairs. The next person who wears the saree will inherit useful knowledge along with the cloth.
